The end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the 20 th saw a long-overdue resurgence in European Drama. Surprisingly to many familiar with the dominance of French, Italian and English drama from the Renaissance onward, that rebirth was sparked by playwrights from the North. Arguably the most important of that cadre was the Russian medical doctor, Anton Chekhov. We will study two of his most performed plays in this order: Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard .
Required reading: Anton Chekhov Plays, Publisher: Penguin Classics; Revised ed. edition (September 3, 2002), ISBN 978-0140447330, $9.30 (translations vary, so all students should use this version)
