Profiles in Courage was written by John F. Kennedy in 1954-1955 while he was recovering from surgery. The book highlights the courage and patriotism of a select group of Americans who, at pivotal moments in history, did what they knew was right—despite the devastating consequences to their public and private lives. In this work, Kennedy examines the fundamental choice that faces us all: whether to act with courage or to comply with the expectations of others. This decision often arises when we must stand against the tide of public opinion on contentious issues, whether that involves facing the anger of constituents, friends, or powerful groups like corporate boards or unions.

The Profile in Courage Award, established by the Kennedy family, honors individuals who exemplify the type of courage Kennedy described in his book. It is given to people—often elected officials—who, guided by their conscience, risk their careers or even their lives in order to pursue a greater vision for the public good. These individuals demonstrate the courage to stand against popular opinion or external pressure, placing the national, state, or local interest above personal or political gain.

We’ll explore the stories of individuals you may recognize, as well as some you might not, spanning both contemporary and historical figures
