This course will examine the history of the Supreme Court from its inception in 1790 to today. Not only has the Court played a role in shaping the history of America, but history and social change have shaped the Court. We will examine both institutional changes and swings in the ideology of

the Court, in part by focusing on some landmark decisions of the Court.

In our final class we will consider the Court's role in these turbulent political times, and whether reform of the Court is desirable or possible.

Instructor: John S.
