The current Administration, through policies and practices, has proclaimed the US a “Christian Nation.” Such attempts to fuse church and state are not new. Rooted in a particular set of Protestant theological and cultural values, the movement revises America’s complex religious history into a slim volume of Christian beliefs. Most of the missing stories convey the struggles for social justice and inclusion that are also grounded in faith traditions. This course spotlights figures from Jewish, Christian, Muslim, and Native American communities whose spiritual wisdom is vanishing from the complex narrative of American religious identities.

Instructor: Kathleen Fisher has taught for WISE since 2019, offering courses in religion and spirituality through a variety of poets, philosophers, religious figures, and historical texts. She holds a Ph.D. in Medieval History and Religion from Boston University. After a long teaching career in Theology at Assumption University, Kathleen now lives in Chapel Hill, NC where she also lectures in Elon University's Life@Elon program.
