Beginning in the colonial era, the course will examine the experiences, contributions, and lives of African Americans throughout the United States through the Civil War. By exploring a variety of people, students will increase their knowledge about African Americans from roughly 1620 to 1865. As agents of their lives, African Americans engaged in the fight to end or escape from slavery, participated in political power, and became critical members of their communities while contributing to the growth of early America.

Instructor: Linda Morse earned a Master’s Degree from Providence College focusing on American History, minoring in Asian studies. She earned a certificate from Boston University's Teaching Africa program and taught AP and college prep U.S. History I & II for decades as well as civics, anthropology, AP African American studies, and AP Human Geography. Learning about the African continent both historically and culturally provides Linda with a cultural and historical understanding of America's diverse populations.
